she doesn't know i know about it

Coming off of an ordinarily boring debut in 11:11, Maria Taylor is back with a surprisingly wonderful indie-pop follow-up entitled Lynn Teeter Flower. Tracks such as "A Good Start", "Smile And Wave", and "Irish Goodbye" all have this catchy-Regina Spektor-like-uplifting-melodies that can easily become huge radio hits. On the other hand, other tracks like "Clean Getaway" and "The Ballad Of Sean Foley" both feature this Jenny Lewis-ish folkie/soul style. While 11:11 was extremely unimpressive, Lynn Teeter Flower is actually a rather entertaining record and it shows Maria Taylor progressing as an solo artist.

let's sing a song about a woman's rage

It seems like forever since I have seen Final Fantasy live... well since last April... and yes, that IS a long time considered that I saw FF live 3 times in 4 months during the first quarter of 2006. Anyways, seeing FF yesterday afternoon at Tranzac reminded me why I think Owen Pallett is the best live performer in the world. Like the last time I saw Owen live, he featured the projection art show thing in the background again... the string version of This Lamb Sells Condos is priceless and he also played 2 or 3 new tracks. So, not that I need to say it, but the show was again pretty damn great! Everyone who has not seen Final Fantasy, you are indeed missing out!! You really need to catch him the next time he comes to your city... even if you are not the biggest fan of his music, seeing a Final Fantasy show is something that everyone must experience at least once!

with your hands on my shoulders, a meaningless movement: A movie script ending...

So there is this pretty neat thing circulating around MySpace and Facebook called IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE? You are suppose to open your music library, put it on shuffle, and insert a song on each of the ‘movie scene’ below... well, I tried the whole shuffle thing and didn’t like the result... So instead, I inserted the tracks manually to fit the described ‘scenes’ below. Btw, feel free to post your shuffle or made-up soundtrack in the comments section.

let's have tea

Although I have always been curious of what Jesse Sykes sounded like, I have actually never heard anything by her until recently. Lusting for new music, I put on Like, Love, Lust & The Open Halls and discovered a familiar but yet refreshing alternative country-folk sound. The one thing that stands out for me is Sykes’ vocal. For me, there is this motherly, affectionate feeling in her voice... which, as a result, creates this cozy and warm sensation. The music of Like, Love, Lust & The Open Halls is calming and relaxing, it is that perfect record to spin in the background while enjoying your afternoon tea/coffee.

Question: Is Great Lake Swimmers capable of making a bad record? Answer: No, probably not ever! If you are a frequent reader of this blog, it is pretty clear that Great Lake Swimmers’ self-titled and Bodies and Minds are among my favourite records of recent years. GLS will release their third full-length entitled Ongiara in Canada on March 27. Naturally, I am already addicted to the new record! Once again, the album features beautiful country-folk style music and not to mention, Tony Dekker’s signature majestic vocal... yes, majestic! Now with three remarkable full-lengths, GLS is slowly becoming one of my favourite bands!

bricks to this old house are breaking

I thought Anberlin was going to be another generic Tooth & Nail band; however, their debut, Never Take Friendship Personal was such a surprisingly great record. Then, I was afraid that their new disc, Cities, would sound the same and I would be greatly bored and disappointed with it. After hearing the new record a handful of times in the past few days, I must say, I am wrong again! I am not one bit disappointed by Cities – there is absolutely nothing boring about it. The album is filled with full blast energy: from the solid vocals to the extremely appealing guitar riffs, Cities will surely wake anyone up from this dull snowy weather!

i don't want the salesmen knocking at my door

Back in 2004, The Arcade Fire’s debut full length, Funeral, came out of nowhere and became one of the biggest acts in the indie music scene. Not only did they attract a huge fan-base in the US and overseas, they somewhat replaced (for a moment) the beloved Broken Social Scene as the Canadian indie-kids’ national heroes. So, like everyone else, I listened to Funeral, but I found myself NOT liking the album whatsoever! I mean, it was borderline enjoyable, and I absolutely didn’t get why everyone thought the album was so brilliant... it was one of those albums I just did not get and couldn’t get into. So, three years later, The Arcade Fire is set to release their follow-up entitled Neon Bible. Even though I despised Funeral, I wanted to give the new album a chance. As soon as I heard the first song, "Black Mirror", I knew that Neon Bible is a different album from Funeral, and I might actually enjoy it. The next track, "Keep The Car Running", is even more enjoyable than the first... and it kind of sounds like a Cure track to me for some reason. Anyways, to my surprise, The Arcade Fire actually released something that I like... Neon Bible is a pretty damn fine record and I think it gets better with each listen!

wow... and no nerds, not world of warcraft...

Gorgeous: that is probably the only word needed to describe Eluvium’s new album. Copia is a 55 minutes journey of extraordinary ambient, experimental, and contemporary classical music style. There are moments when Copia will remind listeners of Sigur Rós or The Album Leafs, but the addition of Eluvium’s clever classical compositions makes Copia different. The piano dominate tracks of "Prelude for Time Feelers" and "Radio Ballet" slightly resemble the style of Liszt or Chopin. Ironically, the hollow-sounding string somehow makes "After Nature" very fulfilling. Finally, the organ makes "Ostinato" sounds like something out of the Middle Ages. I know that it is beyond freezing in Toronto right now and no one wants to walk outside, but if you do, put on Copia and let it guide you though the long cold march.

Back in 2004, Nikola Sarcevic released his first solo album, Lock-Sport-Krock. Since Millencolin was my favorite band during my first and second year of University, I was more than excited for Sarcevic’s solo project... but after hearing Lock-Sport-Krock, I was dreadfully disappointed as I thought the album was extremely weak both musically and lyrically! Late last year, Sarcevic released his second solo album entitled Roll Roll And Flee in Europe. I actually didn't care for it at all until maybe a few days ago… I listened to the record for the first time and it turns out to be a pretty fine album. There is more depth to Sarcevic’s lyrics and the music has more dimensions than those on Lock-Sport-Krock. So, even if you were greatly let down by Sarcevic’s last release, you should still give Roll Roll And Flee a chance as it is by far a better album!

he was a child of a difficult nature

I discovered Bromheads Jacket from their brilliant cover of The Streets’ "When You Wasn't Famous". After falling completely in love with that track, I was anxious to hear their full length, Dits from the Commuter Belt. Bromheads Jacket took elements from various artists and genres to create an unforgotten style that can be heard on Dits from the Commuter Belt. For instance, they recreated the vocal style and witty characteristic from Art Brut, and mixed that with similar loud and distorted sound of Death From Above 1979 and The White Stripes. The record is actually very garage rock and punk sounding: for the most parts, Dits from the Commuter Belt is fast, heavy and loud! I am also very impressed by their ability to create extremely engaging and amusing narratives.
