we will come to your town, burn your house down, turn the sky brown

I went to see Be Your Own Pet with Millie on Monday at the Horseshoe. Their set was really short, but extremely fun. The crowd was really into them... actually it was probably one of the better "indie" audiences I’ve seen in a while... people were actually moshing… so much fun!!! Jemina, the vocalist was crazy, reminds me a little of Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs... sorry, I promise this is the last time I am comparing Be Your Own Pet to YYYs. Anyways, I took some very poor quality pictures as well as a video for "Bicycle, Bicycle" but due to conversion troubles, the video is not up... Oh, I also uploaded an EP I got at the show, which I had no idea they released!

1. Bicycle, Bicycle
2. Girls on TV
3. Fire Department
4. Take That Walk
5. Hillmont Avenue

Speaking of EPs, I have also uploaded Woo! by Tilly And The Wall, an out-of-print EP recorded in Conor Oberst's basement back in 2003.

1. I Can't Believe You
2. Shake Shake
3. Do You Dream at All
4. In Bed All Day
5. Pictures of Houses

hands down, this is the greatest event in toronto’s history

Back in match, I mentioned a Toronto event called Nuit Blanche that will be taking place on this Saturday. Just in case you missed that post, Nuit Blanche is a free all-night contemporary art event that's taken place from 7:01 pm on September 30 and it will last until sunrise the next day. Every single art form will be display in various settings... I am talking about paintings, illustrations, films, performance, installations, etc. are being showcased in regular galleries, museums, parks, universities, streets, sidewalk, churches... basically everywhere! I am planning to spend the entire time exploring the city. I think this is going to be the best thing that will ever happen to the city of Toronto and I seriously cannot wait!!!!!!

For more info, you can check out the Nuit Blanche website here. I got my program/guide from a Starbucks across from my school, so I guess go to your nearest Starbucks and see if those are available.

woohoo

Covers are usually really horrible or really good... here are two covers that I think are pretty damn good. I especially enjoy The Format’s version of "Wild World".

all this time, we wait on the shallow line, for a martyr to save our lives

So I went to see Underoath with Silverstein and Moneen on Saturday night. I thought the show was great: Moneen was incredible... as always... they are one of those amazing live bands that I can never get tired of seeing, as I have mentioned in the CMW posts many months ago. Silverstein was boring (they were ridiculously popular… which is crazy to see because I remember seeing them played about four or five years ago in front of like fifty kids only). Naturally, Underoath, the headliner played a mind-blowing set!!! (I already want to see them live again!) However, the main point of this post is not about that concert, although somewhat related... well, it’s about Moneen. Seriously, I can’t believe I never wrote a review for The Red Tree yet... the new Moneen album that came out while I was still at U of T, I think that was in April. While their last release Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now? featured some really great and catchy songs, the album as a whole is mediocre. For me, it seemed like their goal was to write as many hooks as possible for that last record. With that aside, three years later, Moneen released The Red Tree. This time, they finally found the right formula in constructing a strong whole package. Without a doubt, The Red Tree is one of the best releases of the year for sure. Every song has a genuine feel of emotions as the band brought their live energetic qualities in studio recordings. The sound is more mature, the lyrics are unforgettable, and every track is solid. In my opinion, The Red Tree is not an album geared only for punk or emo fans, I think any music lovers should give it a try... and if you like the songs below, go buy the album, the artwork and packaging is absolutely beautiful!

technical difficulties

Don't know why, but the blog was down for a few hours today... anyways, it is back up now... this is such a pointless post!!!

everything is a copy of a copy

American Distress is the major theme from a band with the same name and same disc title. The album revolves around the idea of fear and putting fear into Americans by various elites who are supposed to protect the people. It is generally a commentary on what American culture has become... hungry materialist media driven imitators (?). The album opens with a dialogue and a banging first track, "Fraudulent Times". The lyrics "everything is a copy of a copy" are probably the most memorable lyrics on any records in recent years. Listening to American Distress creates this sense of explosion; it makes you want to scream and blow your freaking mind into pieces... I guess this makes sence with track titles like "Ill Logic" and "Nerve Damage". The title track totally sums up everything about American Distress: lies and America's irreversible mess and chaos. The track that follows, "Bottles And Obscenities" features a little dialogue/skit that might be suggesting a future New York City as a chaotic wasteland. "Eternal Bullshit" is the media lies track. It features the ironically enthusiastic lines of "Yeaahhh is not real..." This is music of the armageddon, well, music about the end of American culture as we know it. Only listen to American Distress with a clear head, and even then, it might just be a little too much for veteran hardcore listeners.

a pete doherty orgy

The Streets recently released a very special single for "Pranging Out". This particular version of the single features none-other than the music poet himself, Pete Doherty... wow, 2-Step + Pete Doherty, what’s next???

exclusive: the crane wife

Man, I didn't even know that The Decemberists are putting out a new record soon . The disc is entitled The Crane Wife, and according to Wikipedia:

The Crane Wife is an old Japanese folk tale. While there are many variations of the tale, a common version is that a poor man finds an injured crane on his doorstep (or outside with an arrow in it), takes it in and nurses it back to health. After releasing it, a woman appears at his doorstep who he falls in love with and marries. Because they are in need of money, his wife offers to weave great silk cloths that they could sell at the market, but only if he agrees never to watch her when she is making it. They begin to sell them and live a comfortable life, but he began to make her weave more and more. Oblivious to his wife's diminishing health, his greed increases and he eventually peeks in to see what she is doing to make the silk she weaves so desirable. He is shocked to discover that at the loom is a crane plucking feathers from her body and weaving them into the loom. The crane, seeing him, flies away and never returns.

...the entire album is inspired by the folk tale above, and you can download it below!

1. The Crane Wife 3
2. The Island
3. Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)
4. O Valencia!
5. The Perfect Crime #2
6. When The War Came

cold colas to coexist

I wrote a very short and inaccurate review on Decompose by The Matches a few weeks ago. On that post, I expressed that it was not a great record; however, after listening to it about a thousand times last week, I have concluded that it is absolute a wicked-cool album!!!! Decompose opens with "Salty Eyes", a nice little string intro that puts you right in with the opening lines, "Do you belong to a song? Does it drag you along by the tongue at the top of your lungs"… and it only gets better during the midway mark with "shrill notes begin, the grim violin, then from the silence a violence of sirens orchestrate the score." "Salty Eyes" is no doubt one of the best opening track I've heard this year. The second track, "Drive", is where the fun begins... thumping bassline and the whisper of “drive, drive, drive...” sets up the pace for the rest of the album. On the surface, the song seems very simple, but there are actually some very smart lyrics: "What we know about sex, learned from alcohol; what we know about sex, learned from bathroom walls…what little we know about love, stole from rock and roll." Holy crap, I was going to review every track from Decompose, but that would be way too long and most of you are probably tired of reading this already... so let me skip to "What Katie Said" - probably my favorite track as I have been singing the chorus uncontrollably. Oh, and then there’s "Sunburn Vs. The Rhinovirus"... the break ("I picked a bad day for the beach, crowds of scarcely clad sides of meat…") is absolute brilliant! Damn, again, it is really hard to not review all the tracks, but I have to skip some in order to make this post readable for those with A.D.D. Anyways, straight to the end track, "The Barbers Unhappiness". This is the only slow and low tempo song on the album (other than the intro). Despite this, it is still a great song... in fact, I think it is a fantastic way to close off such a fun, upbeat album. Oh no, I have to go to my typography class now. Enjoy the tracks below!

Salty Eyes [wicked-cool song]
Drive [wicked-cool song]

a long awaited patrick wolf update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My voice is currently an octave lower than it should be due to the smoke machine used in the video.. there is a reason why dry ice is used in graveyard zombie scenes and that is because it is EVIL.

But what fun the shoot was.... and quite a disco damage workout too.. although in the name of pop I decided to keep the takes where I start bleeding or almost get run over by a bus or slip over in my new baby blues and bang my skull against the wet disco floor for the dvd..

Here are some stills from the video.. Very very soon you will be able to see the final piece.. It was such an honour to have my song made visual by Maria Mochnacz.. magic is always made if the person behind the camera is a true passionate artist. I hope you are going to enjoy our little collaboration of music and film.

much love and strength x patrick

Go here for PW's new 'Accident & Emergancy' website... where you can hear a sample of a new track!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, some of you may know this little girl named Millie. Well, a while back, she took down her blog for no reason at all. However, the other day, she told me that she started a new one but would not tell me the url. So basically, I am trying to embarrass her in this post as a punishment for not telling me the address to her new blog.

tiff 2006

The Toronto International Film Festival starts today. What film(s) are you seeing? What do you what to see? I want to see this Australia film called 2:37, but unfortunately, it is sold out... but I got tickets to a "teen horror" called All The Boys Love Mandy Lane. I also want to see this amazing looking animated film called Renaissance, and three Canadian films: Citizen Duane, Everything’s Gone Green, and Trapped Ashes.

i think i'm turning japanese

I downloaded the entire Asian Kung-Fu Generation discography. So far, I have listened to their new album, Funclub, Kimi Tsunagi Five M, and the Rewrite Single. I am so into them right now... which is kind of weird because I have no idea what the songs are about.

Alright, most of you are probably wondering what the hell is Asian Kung-Fu Generation. Well, Asian Kung-Fu Generation is a pop-rock/alternative band from Japan. I don’t know what is it... maybe it’s their catchy guitar riffs or maybe it’s their fast and energetic tempo... but I have been listening to them a lot during the last few days... despite the fact that I have absolutely no idea what the vocals mean. I have to admit, Asian Kung-Fu Generation is not for everyone, solely for the language part. Download a few tracks and decide for yourself... they might just be that foreign band you have been waiting for your whole life.

oh dear

I don’t like The Dears. I find them boring and... well... very boring. However, while I was sick in bed a couple of weeks ago, I saw a video for the song "22: The Death Of All Romance" and I actually thought it was pretty good. I especially like the female vocal in it.

someone screwed paris... big time!

Guerrilla artist, Banksy, pulled a prank on a crap load of Paris Hilton albums by modifying the artworks and taking out the actual CDs and replacing them with his version of the disc. You can check out pictures of the tampered album here.

you've got standards girl, what the hell are you doing with me?

I have been dying to hear Decomposer by The Matches for a while now. So of course, I was pretty ecstatic when I got my hands on it mid-last-week. Although it is not a great record, I was definitely not disappointed with Decomposer. It is fun, poppy, and dancy… oh, and lead vocal Shawn Harris can hit some very high notes! Anyways, I am going to make this review short because I am going to Ikea with my roommate... so, check this album out if you like Say Anything and the new Head Automatica disc.

I saw Little Miss Sunshine last night... I thought it was great... really hilarious. If you like off-beat dysfunctional family comedy like The Royal Tenenbaums, you should definitely check out Little Miss Sunshine.
