Started listening to this band called Chapel Club the other day. They recently released their debut, Palace... reminds me a little of The Maccabees and The National... good stuff.

iceage: new brigade
Holy shit, I cannot stop listening to Iceage's debut, New Brigade. There are just far too many reasons why New Brigade is absolutely brilliant. If you ever wonder what Hüsker Dü music with Ian Curtis-like vocal sound like, this is it. I just love the explosively noisy, raw, and carefree sound—really reminds me of old punk music. I know it is probably too early to judge since I only started listening to New Brigade about a month ago, but I honestly believe that this is one of the best albums I’ve heard in the last 5 years! With the release of this masterpiece, I predict 2011 is going to be a huge year for Iceage (...at least I hope)!

who are the suburbs?
Woke up this morning still in disbelieve that Arcade Fire won a Grammy(!?)... and album of the year for that matter! Not that I think highly of the Grammys, but it's still pretty cool that a little band from Montreal, Quebec is recognized by a mainstream award show! Let’s celebrate by looking at these beautiful Neon Bible tour posters from Burlesque of North America:

esben and the witch: violet cries
I am a big believer in 'seasonal albums'—there are just certain albums that are absolutely perfect during certain times of the year—Timber Timbre’s S/T=winter while A New Chance by The Tough Allianc=summer. At the moment, my choice album for my snowy/freezing morning walks to work is Esben And The Witch’s Violet Cries. On one hand, Violet Cries reminds me of Mount Eerie’s Wind's Poem or Scott Walker’s The Drift for its ghostlike atmosphere; you can really get lost or feel isolated and lethargic in the mysteriousness of each track. On the other hand, it obtains that dark 'pop' beats and hauntingly beautiful vocals of Zola Jesus/Bat For Lashes/Portishead. Violet Cries is certainly an unique and very refreshing album. It is one that gets better with each listen. Out of the 20+ albums I’ve heard so far in this young year, it is definitely one that stood out.

joyce manor: joyce manor
My first recommendation/first great album of 2011 is Joyce Manor’s S/T debut. I am enjoying this record tremendously for its mid-90s punk sound—namely Jawbreaker and The Promise Ring. The album is mostly fast, youthful, energetic and catchy as hell, very comparable to In The Court Of The Wrestling Let's by Let’s Wrestle. There is not one bad song in Joyce Manor; in fact, it is an almost flawless record... I only say almost because clocking at just under 20 minutes, it is/feels way too short... can’t wait to hear more music from this band!
