Sweet! The Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack has been nominated for three Academy Awards! A. R. Rahman for original score while "O... Saya" and "Jai Ho" are both up in the original song category. I absolutely love the music in the movie, I really hope A. R. Rahman wins for original score!

The film is also nominated for best picture and best director, and it deserves both awards; Slumdog is Danny Boyle’s best film since Trainspotting!

On the other hand, I am quite disappointed that Revolutionary Road and The Dark Knight are not up in the best picture category. I am pretty surprise that Kate Winslet is not nominated for her incredible performance in Revolutionary Road and even more shock that it didn’t get an adapted screenplay nomination! WFT!?!? …I am very disappointed!

I saw Persepolis last night. The film is as great as the graphic novel! The clip above is the funniest and most memorable scene of the film, it totally caught me by surprise!

there will be blood

Last weekend, 14 very lucky cities got a taste of P.T. Anderson’s critically acclaimed and highly anticipated film, There Will Be Blood. In case you have not heard of or seen the trailer for it, here’s the IMDB description of the film: There Will Be Blood is “A story about family, greed, religion, and oil, centered around a turn-of-the-century Texas prospector (Daniel Day-Lewis) in the early days of the business.”



It was clear that everyone in the theatre was beyond ecstatic to watch Anderson’s first feature film in five years as it played in front of a very enthusiastic jam packed Toronto audience on Saturday night. So, was it worth all the hype and excitement? Yes, absolutely! There Will Be Blood became my favourite film of 2007 that evening and Daniel Day-Lewis gave one of the most exceptional acting performances that I have seen in recent years. The style of Anderson’s latest is very different from his pervious films such as Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch-Drunk Love; (as the people whom I viewed the film with suggested) it felt somewhat like a Kubrick film, especially the opening and closing scenes.

Along with the flawless plot, direction, and acting, the original score by Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead’s guitarist) significantly enhanced the overall quality of There Will Be Blood. The suspenseful and haunting string sections fit perfectly with the tone and atmosphere of the film. I thought the score felt a bit Hitchcock-ish. Nonetheless, Jonny Greenwood’s original score works magnificently with the film and as an album separate from the film as well. The bottom line is, I highly recommend seeing Anderson’s masterpiece, and the accompanying soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood is outstanding as well!

Sigur Rós’s concert DVD, Heima, came out in North America about a week ago. I had the pleasure of watching it on the big screen last Friday at the Royal Cinema in Toronto and I was completely blown away by the experience. Ultimately, you don’t have to be a Sigur Rós fan to enjoy Heima. The movie is naturally beautiful and the music is gorgeous as usual. I especially loved the way the film was edited; in particular, the use of various imageries to foreshadow future scenes/events.

Heima is out on a 2-disc DVD set and a deluxe edition that comes with photobook. I have to say, get the deluxe edition if you see it! (Most stores in downtown Toronto are sold out of it already) The packaging and contents are outrageously stunning! I paid $30 for the deluxe edition and I feel that I should’ve paid more for it!

If you are like me (who is completely obsessed with the DVD at the moment), you probably can’t stop watching/listening to the full-length performances on the second disc. And since the Hvarf /Heima CD set is just not enough, I have taken all the live performances (15 in total) from Heima and converted them into mp3s. You can download all of them below!

the saddest movie ever made

I am a pretty big fan of French cinema, especially French New Wave (Godard is one of my favorite directors of all time)! I just love the style, the radical ideas, political tones, and romanticism of French New Wave. About a week or so ago, I saw Louis Malle’s Au Revoir Les Enfants for the first time and since then, I have not been able to take that film out of my mind. It is absolutely a remarkable movie... oh, and it is probably the saddest movie I have ever seen in my life! The film takes place at a Catholic boarding school during WWII. It is ultimately a story about the ignorance and innocence of young school boys growing up during a very confused and evil period of time. (You can read a more detail synopsis here) Anyone with a heart should watch Au Revoir Les Enfants at least once, and I guarantee, it will make you cry!

i see you

I saw this wonderful Japanese film called All About Lily Chou-Chou last night. The film deals with the lives of a group of teenagers; it has all the typical school-kids themes: bullying, coming of age stories, etc.; however, it is so well done that none of them seem cliché. I especially love the mood and the pace of Lily Chou-Chou... the director utilized this low-key tone: everything in the film works together to create this perfect harmony. In addition, the film produces genuine emotions through the portrayal of innocence and alienation among the children.

Lily Chou-Chou is accompanied by a topnotch soundtrack which features Japanese singer/actress Salya. Her music has this haunting quality; the music kind of reminds me of Sigur Rós/The Album Leaf while the vocal is a bit like Portishead/ PJ Harvey.
