The Front Bottoms’ self-titled debut is the catchiest album since Dog Problems by The Format. Indeed, there are some similarities between the two. Much like Dog Problems, The Front Bottoms features a handful of humorously cheesy and immature lyrics; but ultimately, the album is fun, carefree and youthful! Every song has at least one or two witty/memorable lines: "Please fall asleep so I can take pictures of you and hang them in my room, so when I wake up I feel like yea everything's alright" ("Flashlight"); "And I will remember that summer, as the summer I was taking steroids. Cause you like a man with muscles, and I like you." ("The Beers")

The energetic sing-along lyrics work perfectly with the lively folk-pop music—this is no doubt the result of the incredible chemistry between the two members of The Front Bottoms, Brian Sella and Mathew Uychich.

The Front Bottoms is pure and playful; it is a highly enjoyable and memorable record... and I can’t get over how damn catchy it is!

starscream: future, towards the edge of forever

I have been listening to Starscream's Future, Towards the Edge of Forever non-stop... I am completely obsessed with the album—I listened to it 10+ times in the past two days! Future, Towards the Edge of Forever is a chiptune album, but not the same type of chiptune/8-bit music as the beloved Anamanaguchi. Rather than ultra hyper punk-influenced chiptune, Starscream's latest offers an ambient and electronic chiptune sound. Future, Towards the Edge of Forever is actually pretty mellow, but the drone and experimental rhythm make the album dynamically mesmerizing. I think this is my favourite instrumental album of the year so far!

New Zola Jesus album, Conatus:

from up the poppy hill

Watched a lovely animated film called Kokuriko-zaka kara (From up on Poppy Hill) at TIFF yesterday. The film felt like a classic Studio Ghibli production with very realistic, genuine and emotional plot + characters—very similar to Whisper of the Heart, Ocean Waves and Only Yesterday.

An added bonus, like so many Ghibli films in the past, Kokuriko-zaka kara had an unforgettable soundtrack! Aoi Teshima, who provided the theme song for Tales from Earthsea, sung the songs for this film. Listen to the theme song for Kokuriko-zaka kara below:
