Hey, Cats and Cats and Cats released another new record! Motherwhale came out a little over a month ago and didn't even know about it till this morning! I am really excited to hear this as I absolutely loved their last record, If I'd Had An Atlas... and who could forget that wicked split EP with This Town Needs Guns back in 2007! Split EPs are usually only mediocre: they are so hard to please as there’s always an artist/band that outshines the other; thus, making the EP half good. So of course, I was more than delighted to find enjoyment from the ENTIRE Cats And Cats And Cats, This Town Needs Guns Split EP. Although to be honest, I am slightly more in favoured of the Cats and Cats and Cats portion of the EP. Cats’ side of the split is playful and celebratory sounding. The vocal deliveries are memorable. "Brilliant The Brilli Ant" carries an anthem like quality while "Anchoress" showcases the all so captivating call and response style. To top things off, the vocals are enhanced by clever dynamics interplay and grand instrumentations. The This Town Needs Guns side of the EP is quite exceptional as well. All four tracks are very emotional driven: "26 Is Dancier Than 4" is very Sunny Day Real Estate sounding while the vocal style of "If I Sit Still Maybe I'll Get Out Of Here" reminds me of Andy Hull from Manchester Orchestra. Much like Cats’ portion of the split, the lovely vocals are once again backed by excellent instrumentations. This Town Needs Guns’ instrumentations sound very technique, resembling bands like Maps & Atlases, Controlling The Famous, and Minus The Bear. If you are not familiar with either of the bands, the split EP is definitely a great introduction to them as it features eight outstanding tracks… and actually, I would go as far as saying that Cats And Cats And Cats, This Town Needs Guns Split EP is probably the best split I have ever heard!
