This is absolutely ridiculous… too violent?? ...is Universal targeting BYOP to elementary school children? This is really a downer for North American fans as "Becky" is the best song on Get Awkward and "Black Hole" and "Blow Yr Mind" are both great too! I am still quite surprised and disappointed that Universal banned those songs from the album... nevertheless, I have put up links to the songs below, so feel free to download them... if you can handle the violence!

Be Your Own Pet have carried their awesomeness from their debut record over to Get Awkward, the band’s sophomore out on March 17. BYOP’s latest features all the great qualities from the first record: the fast, fun, noisy, and energetic garage-punk-rock sound; yet, Get Awkward is a better album because of its harsher and more playful attitude. BYOP are great in that they are able to make their songs so damn fun and carefree so the listeners forget that the subjects and lyrics are simple and immature at times.

My favourite song off of Get Awkward, and perhaps the most amusing song of the year is “Becky”. It is an absolutely hilarious tale about a girl seeking revenge on her former best friend… I think the chorus sums it up best: "I heard you talked a lot of shit about me to your new best friend. What does it matter anyway? Cos I found a new best friend ok, me and her will kick your ass, we’ll wait with a knife after class." “Becky” is a great example of what the rest of the album feels like: the bitter and reckless mind-set is always complemented with a witty attitude. Get Awkward is an outstanding second record and it has successfully fulfilled all my expectations.

I went to see Be Your Own Pet with Millie on Monday at the Horseshoe. Their set was really short, but extremely fun. The crowd was really into them... actually it was probably one of the better "indie" audiences I’ve seen in a while... people were actually moshing… so much fun!!! Jemina, the vocalist was crazy, reminds me a little of Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs... sorry, I promise this is the last time I am comparing Be Your Own Pet to YYYs. Anyways, I took some very poor quality pictures as well as a video for "Bicycle, Bicycle" but due to conversion troubles, the video is not up... Oh, I also uploaded an EP I got at the show, which I had no idea they released!

I think a lot of you out there would really enjoy Be Your Own Pet. They sound kind of similar to Yeah Yeah Yeahs (the Fever To Tell disc) and Test Icicles. Their new self-titled album is full of noisy-garage-punk-rock tunes. All the songs on Be Your Own Pet are fast, fun, and energetic. If you are hungry for something loud that you can dance and rock to, Be Your Own Pet will definitely fulfill that craving!
