generals have fought for spies like you

The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse is a very gloomy second album by the Montreal based band, The Besnard Lakes. The album deals with themes of loneliness, anxiety, and deception. In "For Agent 13", the lonely narrator desperately seeks the return of an ex-lover. Likewise, both "Because Tonight" and "Rides the Rails" are about the protagonist leaving the narrator; the former commits suicide while the latter runs away to an undisclosed location. Indeed, the lines: "...Because tonight, When everyone's gone home, You'll grab the knife, To satisfy your dark needs..." in "Because Tonight" are some of the most troubling and depressing lyrics of the year. The music on The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse fits the lyrics perfectly: the instrumentations are arranged in a way that projects a haunting quality. On the other hand, a sense of power is displayed throughout the record. In various points, this characteristic is symbolized by the many layers of sounds, the ascending volume, and the drowning of vocals by the heavy melodies. The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse is a musically in-depth record; and it should take any person just one listen to realize that it is a brilliantly crafted work of art!!
