new babyshambles!!!!!!!!!!!

In exactly a week, Babyshambles will be releasing (in the U.K.) their brand new EP entitled The Blinding. This is quite exciting for me since I am trilled by anything Pete Doherty. As a result, I won’t even review this EP as it would be extremely biased and I would most likely have nothing negative to say... in fact, it’d probably end up being another rant on how Pete Doherty is one of the greatest song-writers ever, etc.

one of my favorite new band names

After months and months of hearing the name Tokyo Police Club, and being kind of interested in hearing the band’s music solely due to the band’s name, I have finally caved in and listened to A Lesson In Crime, TPC’s debut EP. It is a typical indie rock album with the typical indie rock sound. Don’t get me wrong, it is an excellent EP: fast, Strokes sounding rock songs. In my opinion, having seven songs on the EP is just the right amount before it becomes redundant; it will be interesting to see how they’d sound on a full-length release.

a very clever and original concept for a music video

Current TV and The Shins teamed up and created the first-ever fan-generated rockumentary, "All Eyes On The Shins". Watch part I The Performance Of "Phantom Limb" below.

short pants, romance, learn to dance

There seems to be quite a lot of shockingly negative reviews on The Walkmen’s take on Pussy Cats (Nilsson). I have been listening to that record for the past few weeks now and it is really had to believe anyone can say anything bad about it. Having almost a music culture and history minor (short one credit… I think) from U of T, I have dealt with a handful of classic rock history and had become a big classic rock fan. For me, it is great to see a contemporary band that I respect, such as The Walkmen, do such a fine job in covering some of the best music ever made such as Bill Haley’s "Rock Around the Clock" and Bob Dylan’s "Subterranean Homesick Blues". As I listen to "Pussy Cats" Starring The Walkmen, I can’t help but imagining what a great time the band had while making this record: there’s this indescribable fun vibe that The Walkmen brought to the record, making the album even more enjoyable to listen to.

In response to the last post... there is absolutely no way I could skip out on a new Patrick Wolf song! Wolf’s version of "I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times" is not bad at all, but again, The Beach Boys’ version is untouchable!!!

Regular readers of this blog know that I am kind of a big fan of Daniel Johnston... so naturally, I am pretty excited about his latest contribution on The Beach Boys tribute album, Do It Again: A Tribute To Pet Sounds. Johnston covered "God Only Knows", one of the best and most important songs in modern music. The original version is a highly complex and in my opinion, Brian Wilson’s best production! With that being said, Johnston’s version of "God Only Knows" is horribly unbearable! I am tremendously disappointed... Johnston totally butchered the song... I couldn’t even listen to the entire thing.

I am now afraid to hear the rest of the tribute to Pet Sounds, despite the fact that Patrick Wolf and Architecture In Helsinki are both featured on the album.

Despite the fact that they broke up in February (insert extremely sad face here), Test Icicles released Dig Your Own Grave two months later. The album is a CD/DVD combo: the CD part is full of remixes, demos, and previously unreleased tracks while the DVD features music videos and live footages. This release is a must for anyone who misses those crazy Brits!!! Personally, I am still very upset about the split as they were one of the most promising bands to come out in recent years!

no one can be trusted under the age of fourteen

So, my new current obsession is the new Bloc Party album, A Weekend In The City (out February 5, 2007). The big question I had before listening to this new record was how does a band follow a near perfect first album? ...and not to mention, probably the best remix album I’ve ever heard? The answer: explore new sounds while also retaining some traditional/signature style. With that being said, A Weekend In The City begins with an unrecognizable new sound. A soft falsetto vocal introduces "Song For Clay (Disappear Here)". That is soon disrupted by a crashing guitar riff that sounds very similar to Muse. In fact, the musical style of this first track is identical to Muse’s style from Black Holes and Revelations. However, that sound is short-lived as "Hunting For Witches" takes a step back to the fast and dancable drum and bass rhythm that makes Bloc Party great. The guitar and everything else here is notably Silent Alarm sounding... perhaps one last taste of the old Bloc Party sound? "Waiting For The 7.18" is one of those tracks that showcases Bloc Party’s remarkable ability to create an amazing sounding build up track. It beings with the crisp sounding xylophone and violin as Kele’s soft vocal enters. "Waiting For The 7.18" is slower, but it still retains the mid-tone guitar riff and rapid drum beats. This is a musically beautiful sounding song, especially about midway, where all the instrument layers come together to create an incredible full-blown texture. Next is their first single, "The Prayer". This track is a great choice as the album’s first single since it is perhaps the catchiest song on the album. Claps, stomps, chants, and random synthesizer effects... what more could one ask for?

I like to think that "Uniform" is the transitional point of A Weekend In The City. It is kind of like a preview of what the rest of the record is like: a slower and softer sound, yet maintaining that classic Bloc Party style... think "Blue Light" and "This Modern Love" from Silent Alarm with an added twist. This song also features my favorite part of the record, a catchy call and response which comes at about 2: 38 ("so why did you go picking fights that you’d lose…"). A quiet drum and a continuous synthesized melody support Kele’s soft voice in "On". A great thing about this song is that the music maintains this calm timbre even when Kele’s vocal becomes louder and more emotional. A chilling, monotone-ish voice begins "Where Is Home?" With a rebellious and angry tone, Bloc Party yet again borrowed from Muse: the crushing guitar riff and falsetto vocal at 2:10. "Where Is Home?" closes with an unbelievable sounding dense relationship between the synthesizer and the drum and bass. "Kreuzberg" is the only song I don’t really care for in A Weekend In The City. Compare to the last track, it is a little too slow and a bit boring. My suggestion, skip forward to "I Still Remember", a great love song with an extremely catchy melody. Everything about this song reminds me of "This Modern Love". "I Still Remember" is very New Wave/The Cure sounding and it is definitely one of the best tracks on the album.

Just when you think that there is no possible way to top the last track or make this album sound greater than it already is, you get hit with "Sunday", a song that features a dramatic rhythm, yet a beautiful melody. The finally track, "SXRT", is perhaps the most emotional song on the album: the lyrics, along with Kele’s vocal give me the chills here. I had a problem with the closing tracks on Silent Alarm; however, the last two tracks on "A Weekend In The City" are absolutely perfect! Oh my, what more can I say? ...A Weekend In The City is just a brilliant piece of art by a very talented band. No doubt, it is a more mature sounding record; they created this new sound that expends from "This Modern Love": the slow tempo, complex drum and bass textures, melodic guitar solo, catchy synthesizer, and soft vocal style… I accept the new Bloc Party!!!

a short story: wincing the night away

The Shins are back with a new single, "Phantom Limb". Oh, how I missed The Shins! This sparkling new song is definitely a great preview for Wincing the Night Away, their first album in four long years, which comes out on January 23, 2007!!!

Phantom Limb [wicked-cool song]

Phantom Limb Single is out this Tuesday, you can preorder it here.

Now, let me tell you all a little story entitled Wincing the Night Away:
Sometimes when I can’t fall asleep, I wished there were "Sleeping Lessons" I could take in school. Then I think, maybe those lessons exist in "Australia", and they’d be taught by a lovely lady named "Pam Berry". I could totally travel to Australia from Toronto by water if I had "Sea Legs". I would bring all nine of my "Red Rabbits" with me; however, with the unpredictable sea environments, they might "Turn On Me" and eat me alive! So I decided to walk across the ocean alone. I encountered a gigantically ugly "Black Wave", it hit me like "Spilt Needles"... whatever those are. Luckily, a "Girl Sailor" saved me as "A Comet Appears" in the beautiful ocean sky.

All The Stuff We Do by Cars Can Be Blue makes me laugh every time I listen to it. The album is not musically or lyrically extraordinary, but it is full of fun, simple, and fun songs. Yes, fun is the keyword for describing All The Stuff We Do... it is more like a comedic album than anything... I mean, how can one take an album seriously when the songs are about dating Batman (at the same time, questioning Batman’s sexuality), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, killing a baby, retards, and dirty sex. All The Stuff We Do is entertaining and it does feature a few memorable tracks; however, it is not a great record overall: perhaps there are too many tracks as the songs do get redundant towards the end of the record.

patrick wolf update: that time of the month....

that time of the month....

oh.. eurgh.. graaa.. brrrrkk... nnnnnnn....

do you ever feel emotionally constipated?
like when you start a new job and people make judgements on
your character without even bothering to start a conversation with you?
I guess this is just one evening... I am generally so happy right now.
This week I had so much fun.. I recorded a performance for channel 4 (a television station in england).. their saturday morning tv show.. I did a little interview too.. (where I felt my brain afterwards wanted to just say the opposite of what my mouth said) My new band of beautifuls mounted to an epic seven piece group.. three strings (the siblings of joy.. victoria and alastair sutherland and the cornish wind in the wires born nat jones).. one bass clarinet (nat scott).. a trombone (the one and only mark rudland)... baritone uke.. (the new madonna.. bishi).. synthesizers and toy piano.. (jo apps). I think the recording will be broadcast in january and then again in march.. stay tuned for broadcast times. My band was bigger than Nelly Furtados but one short of Beyonces.. I must be onto an epic communication.

In other news.. I am in the early process of making a new music video for a song that is very dear to my heart from the new album. It will be a little visual, film entry to the new album, before the actual beast is unleashed and the next single is unveiled. I can confirm the song will be blue and there will be bells involved. I wrote the storyline that I then gave to a fantastic director.. and we will be delivering a great collaboration this winter.. if all goes to plan. My last video for A&E is a very different thing to what I have planned for the next few videos.
I have already very much started the press for the new record... can I apologise in advance for anything odd that comes out of my mouth? I tend to get bored a little easily and sometimes I wander off into the realm of hans christian andersen.. have any of you actually read his stories? I beg you to get a compendium this christmas and get lost in his words.

I think the thing is.. I belong primarily behind an instrument.. not a camera or a journalists tape recorder.. I long to disapear behind a type writer one day and finish off my book i've been writing for a while, but I must take one thing at a time and fulfill my duties to standing up for my work in the real world. I always say.. it's like when you give birth to a baby and you can't just give it up for adoption or leave it in an alleyway for some stranger to discover.. you need to put in a good nursery and feed it properly until it's fully grown.

I have been very drawn to soon wearing a burqa... I am disgusted that the british government is starting a ban of what the public is allowed to wear, I understand there must be a reform on sexist politics within the muslim religion, and a reform on the prejudice of the white racist british public.. but.. First hooded tops..
then now veils.. I have worn both in my time.. I once had a victorian black funeral veil that I used to wear on the street when I felt reclusive.. and I have been turned out of about six supermarkets here in London for wearing my favourite sequined hooded shirts and jackets and refusing to take the hood down while buying doughnuts and baileys.

Ok.. I must go.. Im sure there is so much to tell you.. but I feel already I have said too much for some. Soon we will be announcing the first leg of the new tour next year.. it will be a long one indeed, and global this time, at last! I will be putting my domestic life into storage for a good year as I live my life on the road. By the way.. I had an email recently from some juvenile criminal who got hold of my email adress complaining about my home decoration too.. Seriously.. I could go into specifics right now.. but please, I am not unfortunately at a missy elliot level where I can afford to wear new shoes everyday and live in a ferrari shaped bed, I moved into my new house so I could write on the grand piano everyday that my landlord left while he travelled Poland. Next time, I have quickly learnt, I will transmit my communications from somewhere much less personal. Im a little regretting letting one small minority in somewhere I thought could feel a part of something in this age of rehearsed personalites.. or perhaps, I dont care and they should go and find work at habitat with anna ryder richardson... and charlie dimmock just for good wholesome luck. I once went to the london marathon just to see her.. it was a real highlight of 2001, It ranks on a level with appearing in the audience of the Vanessa Feltz show in 1997.. so perhaps that is not such a punishment.

I have been designing the new website with a good person.. It should finally be ready this december. I am looking forward to showing you an extensive gallery and a little more of the story you have been following so far.

Anyway.. Unconditional love to all of you.. I am in a funny mood.. I still believe that certain boys get periods too. I need to write more music.. retreat from the sun a little. I am going to egypt soon.. I long to see the pyramids.. be with camels.. kiss a crocodile... burn my skin in solitude..

speak soon.. perhaps at the union chapel.. I start reharsals next week, Im very excited, very excited indeed.

love x patrick

my favorite record of 2007

Yes, you read it right... I have listed Dustin Kensrue’s solo debut, Please Come Home, as my favorite record of 2007. That’s not saying much since it is the only record I’ve heard that is scheduled to be released in 2007. Please Come Home is actually a very fine solo project by Thrice’s frontman. Unlike a certain hardcore gone acoustic art (cough Alexisonfire... cough... City and Colour), Please Come Home is not just another bland, boring unplugged album. Kensrue adopts the alterative-country/folk style very similar to The New Amsterdams and the result is excellent: the album is full of uplifting 'country rhythms' with some very 'country lyrics'. Perhaps the most surprising part of the record belongs to Kensrue new found and may I say, improved vocal style. It is crisp, melodic, and very nostalgic sounding. Without a doubt, Please Come Home will definitely be one of the first records I will buy in 2007.

and i know that you're a sucker for anything acoustic

Alright, who is a sucker for anything acoustic? I know I am... that’s why I am recommending Owen’s latest, At Home With Owen. Actually, the record is more than just acoustic music... in fact; each song features various layers of lovely instruments ranging from the acoustic/electric guitar, violin, piano, and many more. "Bad News", the first track off the record sets the tempo for the rest of the album. The beautiful melodies, along with Owen’s soft voice, force you to listen to each song with extra caution... At Home With Owen is perfect for long walks under the sun during those cold winter days.
